Now With Animated Water
After introducing you to the grassy field it is time to nix tha fields we are an archipelago now! I have turned off the collisions on the water, so you can make like a certain someone and walk on said water. There is not a lot to do right now, but let me walk you through the vision.
-
You are someone on an island.
-
You have access to a tree.
-
You punch this tree for wood.
-
You make a weapon with the wood.
-
The first wave of critters start to spawn and you beat them away. You need to extract enough wood to build a boat/bridge(not yet final) to make it to the next island.
-
This triggers a slightly larger wave, you have access to stone on this island.
-
so you build a stone weapon and beat them back. and so on.
What you read above was an example of primary gameplay loop. There is progression and challenge as well. So if I add up some randomness in the loop and we have the makings of something.
Will that something be fun? I think another lesson that has been drilled into me has been playtest early and playtest often. This helps with the process of finding the fun early on. Hence why I am building in public like this.
Adding a todo here: turn collision layer back on after pushing this build. layer 2. lol
I didn't just spend time making islands, there was some time spent experimenting with island shape and i discovered that because we are building on a grid system and the collisions are on the water there is a lot of friction. ideally i would have the collision on the edges of the ground but i am lazy today and that is a problem for next week.
As such I have made the decison that to make sure that there is enough space on the islands for actual fun we will need to make them big and not with a lot of jagged edges (formally called jaggies I don't make the rules).
Most of the time also went in deciding the happy path of the gameloop. There are still one or two decisons which i am thinking about that's namely:
-
boat : with a boat you have the freedom to explore the islands. Progression needs to account for this.
-
bridge: with a bridge between islands I have a lot more control over progression.
Then there is the actual math involved here, like how many resources and so on. Need to do some research on that, and how to make randomness seem fun and fair.
Have fun playing as the son of God and check out Mogura Smash your water walking days are numbered if I have anything to do about it!!!!!!
